Powered Stair Climbing & Lifting on Stairs
We provide a UK-wide powered stair climbing service for heavy and awkward items that need to move safely up or down stairs. When forklift or crane access isn't possible, our stair climbing systems and controlled handling methods allow moves through tight internal routes and live environments.
Our standard powered stair climbing capability is up to 680 kg (more by alternative methods where suitable). Every job is different and fully planned with RAMS and carried out under competent supervision. We have an emphasis on safety, speed and complete care.
- Typical environments:
- Plant rooms & basements
- Office blocks & public buildings
- Retail and hospitality sites
- Laboratories and medical facilities
- High-end residential properties
Complete Powered Stair Climbing Service
Up to 1000kg
Battery-powered stair climbing machines enable heavy items to be moved up or down stairs safely and efficiently. Where a stair climber isn't suitable, we can advise on alternative methods.
RAMS as Standard
Stair moves are planned and supervised. We assess route constraints (widths, turns, landings, thresholds), protect floors/finishes and deliver to a task-specific method statement.
Safety & Complete Care
We follow strict health and safety policies, with equipment maintained to LOLER and manufacturer schedules. Controlled handling protects both your item and the building from pickup to placement.
Stair Climbing Success Through Advanced Planning
When required, we can use in-house CAD-based checks to validate clearances on tight routes (stairs, landings and turns). This helps confirm feasibility before the move and reduces the risk of delays on site.
- Route planning: stairs, landings, doorways and tight turns
- Floor and wall protection measures where required
- Alternative methods if stair climbing isn't suitable
- Prompt quoting and fast mobilisation when needed
What Are Powered Stairclimbers?
What Is a Powered Stairclimber?
A powered stairclimber is a motorised lifting device designed to transport heavy loads up and down staircases. Unlike a conventional sack truck or manual trolley, a powered stairclimber uses an electric drive system to do the hard work - reducing physical effort, minimising risk of injury and making it possible for one or two trained operators to move loads that would otherwise require a full team or a crane.
Powered stairclimbers come in two main types. Track-based machines that use a rotating rubber track to grip each step and smoothly carry the load between floors. Wheel-based machines such as the PowerMate use a motorised drive screw and balanced pivot to walk the load up or down one step at a time, with the operator guiding rather than lifting.
Both types are battery-powered, portable and can be transported in a standard van. They are used across a wide range of industries and settings from residential properties and care homes to hospitals, data centres, offices and construction sites.

SANO LiftKar Powered Stairclimbers
The SANO LiftKar series uses a patented rotating track mechanism to climb stairs smoothly and safely. We operate several models across the range including the MTK 190, MTK 310, HD and SAL variants.
These machines handle loads from approximately 170 kg up to 330 kg and are well suited to items such as appliances, furniture, catering equipment, medical devices and laboratory instruments.
Their compact size and quiet operation make them ideal for use in occupied buildings, hospitals and residential properties.
PowerMate Powered stairclimbers
PowerMate stairclimbers from LP International are built for heavy-duty commercial and industrial use. Using a motorised drive screw and natural pivot-balance design, PowerMate machines can handle loads from around 200 kg up to 680 kg depending on the model. We operate the L-1, LE-1, M-1 and M-2 models. The M-1 and M-2 are particularly effective for large, heavy items such as commercial boilers, generators, safes and industrial plant equipment. PowerMate machines can also function as tailgate lifts, raising and lowering loads onto vehicle beds.

For heavier or more complex stair climbing tasks we also operate AATA Stair Robot equipment. These machines extend our capabilities for loads and situations that exceed the capacity of conventional powered stairclimbers.
We are recognised and approved by Stanley Handling, the main UK distributor of the PowerMate powered stairclimber range.
Powered Stairclimber FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Powered Stairclimbers
What weight can a powered stairclimber handle?
This depends on the machine. Our fleet covers loads from approximately 170 kg up to 680 kg using powered stairclimbers alone. For items exceeding this such as large commercial boilers weighing over 1,000 kg we combine powered stairclimbers with additional heavy lifting equipment and techniques to complete the move safely.
Do I need training to use a powered stairclimber?
Yes. Powered stairclimbers are classified as plant machinery and operators should be trained and certificated before use. Our fully operated service offers professionally trained teams who handle everything.
What types of stairs can a powered stairclimber handle?
Powered stairclimbers work on straight stairs, spiral stairs, curved stairs and external steps. Our operators assess the staircase in advance and select the most appropriate machine and method for the conditions.
How much does it cost to hire a powered stairclimber?
