UK Wide Safe Moving, Lifting & Removal Services

We move safes, vault doors, fireproof cabinets and security equipment across the UK. From a 200kg data safe in a fifth-floor office to a 2-tonne bank vault in a basement, we provide planned, supervised moves through the most restricted access routes - including stairs, narrow corridors, passenger lifts and internal doorways.

Every safe move is risk-assessed and route-planned before we arrive on site. We provide RAMS, floor protection and competent supervision as standard, with CSCS-accredited operatives on every job.

Why Safes Need Specialist Moving

Safes are one of the most challenging items to move. They concentrate extreme weight into a small footprint, which creates problems that standard removal companies aren’t equipped to deal with.

 Floor loading

Floor loading is the first concern. A 1,000kg safe sitting on four small feet can exert more pressure per square centimetre than a loaded forklift. Without proper weight distribution — using spreader plates, ply boarding or planned routes that avoid vulnerable floor areas — you risk cracking tiles, denting timber floors, or in the worst case punching through a suspended floor entirely.

 No standard lift points

No standard lift points make safes awkward to handle. Unlike machinery or plant equipment, most safes aren’t designed to be lifted. There are no crane eyes, no forklift pockets, and the weight distribution is rarely even. Moving a safe safely means using controlled methods — machine skates, toe jacks, powered stair climbers, or bespoke rigging — matched to the specific unit.

Occupied premises

Occupied premises add another layer of complexity. Safe moves frequently happen in offices, banks, retail units, and government buildings where staff and the public are present. The route needs to be managed, floors protected, and the move completed within a tight window to minimise disruption.

Types of Safes and Security Equipment We Move

  • • Cash safes and deposit safes — from compact under-counter units (100–200kg) to large commercial cash safes (500kg+). We work with manufacturers including Chubb and Phoenix.
  • • Data safes and media safes — fire-rated units protecting digital media, hard drives and documents. Often found on upper floors of office buildings with no goods lift access.
  • • Fireproof filing cabinets — deceptively heavy for their size. A four-drawer fireproof cabinet can weigh 300–500kg, and they’re usually in the busiest part of the office.
  • • Bank safes and strongroom doors — the heaviest units we handle, regularly exceeding 1,000–2,000kg. Vault doors are particularly challenging due to their size and the precision required during removal and installation.
  • • ATMs and cash-handling equipment — we’ve supported the major UK banks with ATM installation, relocation, and removal across branch networks.
  • • Gun safes and security cabinets — residential and commercial installations, often requiring stair access to secure rooms.

Safe Stair Climbing and Safe Lift And Shift

Stairs are the single biggest challenge in safe moving. The combination of extreme weight, no lift points, and the confined space of a stairwell makes it a job that requires specialist equipment and experience.

We use powered stair climbing technology to move safes weighing up to 1,000kg up or down stairs. The stair climber grips the safe securely and uses powered tracks to ascend or descend one step at a time under full operator control. It's slower than a crane lift, but it works in places where cranes, forklifts, and hoists simply can't reach - internal staircases, basement access, upper floors of office blocks and residential properties.

Before every stair climb, we carry out a route survey to check staircase width, headroom, turn clearances, landing space, and the structural condition of the stairs themselves. We also assess the weight of the safe against the load capacity of the staircase - older buildings in particular may need a structural check before a heavy safe can be moved.

For safes that exceed stair climber capacity, or where the staircase isn't suitable, we assess alternatives: gantry hoisting through stairwells, HIAB lifting through windows or openings, or controlled lowering/raising systems. There's always a solution - the question is finding the safest one.

Vault Door Removal and Installation

Vault doors are among the heaviest single items we move. A standard commercial vault door can weigh anywhere from 500kg to well over 2,000kg, and they need to be handled with precision — both to protect the door itself and to avoid damaging the surrounding structure.

Removal typically involves unbolting and unhinging the door, then controlling its weight as it's separated from the frame. This requires careful rigging, hydraulic jacking, and a planned route to get the door out of the building. Installation is the same process in reverse, with the added requirement of precise alignment in the frame.

We've removed vault doors from banks, commercial premises, and private properties — including situations where the vault is being decommissioned and the door needs to come out through corridors and doorways that were never designed for it.

How We Plan a Lift And Shift Safe Move

Every safe move follows the same structured process, scaled to the complexity of the job:

  • • Site survey and route assessment — we check the safe dimensions and weight, measure doorways, corridors, lifts and stairways along the route, assess floor types and loading capacity, and identify any obstructions or hazards.
  • • Method selection - based on the survey, we determine the safest approach. This might be machine skates on a flat route, powered stair climbing for stair access, or a combination of methods for more complex moves.
  • • RAMS documentation - risk assessment and method statement prepared for the specific job, covering manual handling, route hazards, equipment, and emergency procedures.
  • • Floor and surface protection - ply boarding, carpet protection film, door frame guards and corner protectors placed along the entire route before the safe moves.
  • • Supervised execution - the move is carried out by trained operatives under competent supervision, with the route managed and clear communication throughout.

Safe Disposal and Removal

If you're decommissioning an old safe, upgrading your security equipment, or clearing a premises, we can remove and dispose of safes responsibly. We handle the full process - disconnection from any alarm or monitoring systems is your responsibility, but from the point the safe is ready to move, we take care of everything: extraction from its current location, loading, transport, and environmentally compliant disposal.

This service is particularly useful for banks and financial institutions closing branches, businesses relocating to new premises, and property developers clearing buildings for refurbishment.

Frequently Asked Safe Moving Questions

Below is a small collection of questions we frequently get asked about moving safes.

How much does it cost to move a safe?

The cost depends on the weight of the safe, the access route (ground floor is simpler than third floor via stairs), the distance involved, and whether any specialist equipment is needed. A straightforward ground-floor move of a standard office safe is a very different job to extracting a 1,500kg bank safe from a basement. We provide fixed-price quotes after understanding the specifics of your job — use the quote form or call us on 01285 741150 and we'll get back to you the same working day.

Can you move a safe up or down stairs?

Yes. We use powered stair climbing technology to move safes weighing up to 1,000kg on stairs. The stair climber is operated by trained personnel and moves the safe one step at a time under controlled conditions. We survey the staircase first to check width, headroom, turns, and structural suitability. For safes heavier than 1,000kg, or where the staircase isn't suitable, we assess alternative methods such as gantry hoisting or lifting through openings.

How do you move a safe without damaging the floor?

Floor protection is planned into every safe move. We lay protective boarding along the full route before the safe is moved (where required), and use machine skates or rollers that distribute the weight evenly across the floor surface. For particularly heavy safes on sensitive flooring, we may use additional spreader plates to reduce point loading. We assess the floor type and condition during the site survey and plan the protection accordingly.

Do you dispose of old safes?

Yes. We offer a full removal and disposal service for safes and security equipment that are no longer needed. Once the safe is disconnected from any alarm or monitoring systems, we handle extraction, loading, transport, and environmentally responsible disposal. This is a common requirement for bank branch closures, office relocations, and building refurbishments.
However we are not a licensed asbestos removal company, so if you have any doubt whether an old/vintage safe may contain asbestos you should consult an asbestos management company first,

Can you install a new safe?

Yes. We work with safe manufacturers, security companies, and end clients to deliver and position new safes. This includes getting the safe from the delivery vehicle into its final location, through whatever access route is required - including stairs, corridors, lifts, and tight doorways. We position the safe exactly where it needs to be, ready for bolting down and connection to any security systems by your safe supplier or security contractor.

What is the heaviest safe you can move?

We regularly move safes and vault doors up to 2,000kg and have handled heavier units on specific projects. For standard moves on flat ground, our equipment handles up to 10,000kg. On stairs, our powered stair climbers handle up to 1,000kg. If your safe exceeds these limits, we'll assess alternative lifting methods during the site survey.

Safe Moving Lift And Shift Projects

Below is a small collection of work we have carried out moving safes

Safe & Vault Removal At Connaught Hotel London

The prestigious Connaught hotel in London was expanding into the old Lloyds bank next door and required the removal of a vault door (1900kg) and 3 large bank cash safes weighing 2500kg each.
All the safes and vault door hardware had to be removed from the old banks basement vault, lifted from the basement to the first floor and the safes were removed using a HIAB crane lorry for disposal.

This job took considerable planning due to the materials, weights and location restrictions involved. The vault door itself required cutting from its hinges using oxy-acetylene cutting technology (by ourselves) and supporting whilst this was carried out.

Safe Storage Cabinet Relocation Cannon Street station, EC4N

A high security electrical safety cabinet required moving into Cannon street station via the public access stairs and placing into  a public facing position.
Working with the Cannon train station and Fuze rail we managed the installation in this public space to minimise disruption and keep all personnel involved safe.

Slimming World HQ, Alfreton

Slimming world had commissioned an old red telephone box (weighing 950Kg) to be converted to a secure locker for the entrance to their head office.

The work required us to transport the telephone box using a lorry mounted crane and then bring the unit into the property led down for up-righting and then placing into position. The flooring and was fragile high end tiling and required significant protection to ensure safe operation throughout.
