Mini Crawler Crane & Spider Crane Hire With Operator

We provide mini crawler crane and spider crane hire with experienced operator for restricted-access lifting across the UK. Where a conventional mobile crane cannot reach — through doorways, along corridors, inside buildings, across soft ground, or in tight courtyards — a spider crane often can.

Our service is delivered as a fully managed contract lift. We assess the access, plan the lift, supply the right spider crane and attachments, produce RAMS documentation and provide competent supervision throughout. You get a safe, controlled lift without the complexity of managing the crane operation yourself.

How a Spider Crane Lift Works

 1 .Enquiry

Contact us with the lift details: load weight and dimensions, lift height and radius, access route to the working area (including any gateways, doorways or corridors the crane needs to pass through), ground conditions and any site constraints. Photos and drawings are always helpful.

 2. Assessment and Lift Planning

We assess the access, ground conditions, lift geometry and any hazards. For complex lifts we carry out a site survey. We select the most suitable spider crane model and lifting accessories and produce a lift plan where required.

 3. Quotation

You receive a clear, fixed-price quotation covering crane hire, operator, rigging, RAMS documentation and any additional equipment or personnel needed.

 RAMS and Documentation

We produce task-specific risk assessments and method statements. For construction sites under CDM, documentation is provided in advance for principal contractor review. Formal lift plans are produced for complex or high-risk lifts.

 Setup & Lift

The spider crane is transported to site and set up by our experienced team. Ground protection is used where required to protect surfaces. Outriggers are deployed and the crane is checked before lifting begins. Lifting is carried out under competent supervision with clear communication between the crane operator, slinger/signaller and any other personnel.

 Completion

The crane is stood down, the site is left clean and tidy, and any completion documentation or handover records are provided.

Mini Crawler Crane Hire With Operator

Restricted-access crane work is high-risk if it isn't planned correctly. That's why we deliver a structured method: site and access assessment, lift planning, RAMS, controlled execution, and competent supervision from setup through to final placement.

Typical mini crawler (spider) crane projects include steelwork and RSJ lifting, glazing and glass installation (with vacuum lifters), awkward internal lifts, plant positioning, and construction support where a larger crane isn't practical.

  • UK-wide spider / mini crawler crane contract lifting
  • Experienced, safety-led operators and site-ready teams
  • Planned lifts with RAMS and competent supervision
  • Solutions for awkward access, low headroom and internal routes
  • Specialist lifting accessories available (including vacuum glass lifting)

If you can share the lift details (load weight, dimensions, radius, lift height, access route and working area), we'll recommend a safe mini crawler crane setup and provide a clear quotation.

What Is a Mini Crawler Crane / Spider Crane?

What Is a Mini Crawler Crane?

A mini crawler crane - also known as a spider crane - is a compact, tracked lifting machine designed to operate in spaces where conventional cranes cannot access. The name "spider crane" comes from the extendable outrigger legs that fold out from the chassis to stabilise the crane during lifting, giving it a spider-like appearance.

Spider cranes are significantly smaller and lighter than mobile cranes. They can fit through standard doorways, travel along corridors, operate indoors, work on weight-sensitive floors, and navigate soft or uneven ground on rubber tracks. Despite their compact size, modern spider cranes can lift loads of several tonnes and reach working heights of over 20 metres.

They are powered by either diesel, electric or bi-energy systems. Electric and bi-energy models produce zero emissions and minimal noise, making them ideal for indoor use, occupied buildings, hospitals and clean environments.

Spider cranes are commonly used for steelwork installation, glass and glazing lifts (often with vacuum lifting attachments), rooftop plant positioning, tree work, hot tub installations, internal construction lifts and any scenario where access restrictions rule out a larger crane.

Why Use a Spider Crane?

When Is a Spider Crane the Right Solution?

A spider crane is typically the right choice when a load is too heavy or too high for manual handling, but the access conditions make a conventional mobile crane impractical or impossible. Common scenarios include:

Restricted Site Access

The site entrance is too narrow for a mobile crane, the ground cannot support a heavier machine, or there is no suitable hardstanding for outriggers. Spider cranes can access sites through standard doorways, garden gates, narrow alleyways and pedestrian routes.

Internal and Indoor Lifting

The lift needs to take place inside a building - in a shopping centre, warehouse, factory, atrium, plant room or basement. Spider cranes can operate indoors on electric power with zero emissions and minimal noise.

Low Headroom

The working area has restricted headroom that prevents the use of larger cranes or telehandlers. Spider cranes have a low transport profile and can operate in surprisingly constrained vertical spaces.

Sensitive Floors and Surfaces

The crane needs to travel across surfaces that would be damaged by heavier machines - raised floors, paving, cobblestones, sports surfaces, listed building interiors and manicured grounds. Spider cranes on rubber tracks distribute their weight across a larger area and leave minimal marking.

Weight-Sensitive Structures

The crane needs to operate on a suspended floor, rooftop, bridge deck or other structure with limited load-bearing capacity. Spider cranes are significantly lighter than mobile cranes of equivalent reach.

Tight Urban and Construction Sites

City-centre sites with limited space, live traffic, pedestrian areas, and proximity to occupied buildings. A spider crane can often set up and operate within a footprint that would be impossible for a larger crane.

If you are unsure whether a spider crane is suitable for your project, contact us with the details and we will advise.

Our Spider Crane Capabilities

Our Mini Crawler Crane Capabilities

We operate spider cranes as part of our broader lift and shift service. This means we don't just supply a crane - we integrate the spider crane lift into a fully planned operation that covers transport, rigging, positioning and final placement of the load.

Lifting Capacity

Our spider cranes handle loads from under 1 tonne up to several tonnes, depending on the model, radius and configuration. For most restricted-access lifts, spider cranes provide more than enough capacity.

Reach and Working Height

Depending on the crane model, we can achieve working heights of up to 20 metres or more, with fly jib extensions available for additional reach where needed.

Low Headroom

The working area has restricted headroom that prevents the use of larger cranes or telehandlers. Spider cranes have a low transport profile and can operate in surprisingly constrained vertical spaces.

Specialist Attachments

We can supply specialist lifting accessories to suit the job, including glass vacuum lifters for glazing work, custom rigging solutions for awkward or delicate loads, and spreader beams for distributed lifting.

Weight-Sensitive Structures

The crane needs to operate on a suspended floor, rooftop, bridge deck or other structure with limited load-bearing capacity. Spider cranes are significantly lighter than mobile cranes of equivalent reach.

Integration With Other Equipment

Because spider crane lifts are often part of a larger move, we can combine the crane operation with our other lifting capabilities - powered stairclimbers, hydraulic skates, lorry-mounted cranes, material lifts and manual rigging - to deliver a complete solution from collection through to final positioning.

What We Lift With Spider Cranes

What We Commonly Lift With Spider Cranes

Our spider crane service covers a wide range of loads and applications:

Steelwork and RSJs

Lifting steel beams, columns, lintels and structural sections into position during construction, refurbishment and loft conversion projects. Spider cranes are ideal for placing steelwork over occupied buildings, through openings and in tight rear-access plots.

Glass and Glazing

Installing glass panels, curtain walling, rooflights and structural glazing using vacuum lifting attachments. The spider crane provides precise, controlled placement that protects the glass and surrounding structure.

Rooftop Plant and HVAC

Positioning air conditioning units, condensers, AHUs, chillers and other plant equipment on rooftops, in courtyards and into plant rooms where a larger crane cannot reach.

Roof Trusses and Timber Frame

Lifting prefabricated roof trusses and timber frame panels during residential and commercial construction. Spider cranes can often operate from within the building footprint.

Generators and Transformers

Placing heavy electrical equipment in substations, plant rooms and confined compound areas.

Hot Tubs, Swim Spas and Garden Features

Lifting heavy leisure items into rear gardens, onto decking and over buildings where access is only possible through a garden gate or alleyway.

Heritage and Restoration

Working on listed buildings, historic sites and conservation areas where ground protection, low impact and precise control are essential.

Tree Work

Sectional felling and removal of large trees in confined spaces where a mobile crane cannot position.

Machinery and Industrial Equipment

Positioning heavy machinery inside factories, workshops and production areas during installation, replacement or relocation.

Mini Cranes vs Other Lifting Methods

Spider Crane vs Other Lifting Methods

Choosing the right lifting method depends on the load, the access and the site conditions. Here is how a spider crane compares to common alternatives:

Spider Crane vs Mobile Crane

A mobile crane offers greater capacity and reach, but requires hardstanding, a large setup area and road access for the vehicle. A spider crane can access sites that a mobile crane cannot — through doorways, across gardens, inside buildings, and on soft or sensitive ground. Where both options are feasible, a mobile crane is usually more cost-effective for heavy, high-reach outdoor lifts. A spider crane wins on access.

Spider Crane vs HIAB / Lorry-Mounted Crane

A lorry-mounted crane (HIAB) combines transport and lifting in one operation and works well for roadside deliveries and straightforward placements. However, it requires the lorry to be positioned close to the lift point with outrigger space available. A spider crane can reach areas well beyond the lorry's reach — round corners, through buildings, deep into sites.

Spider Crane vs Telehandler / Forklift

Telehandlers and forklifts are effective for ground-level moves and moderate lifting heights, but cannot slew (rotate) loads and have limited reach at height. A spider crane offers full 360-degree rotation, greater precision and the ability to place loads above, behind and around obstacles.

Spider Crane vs Manual Methods (Gantry, Chain Hoist, Scaffold Runway)Roof Trusses and Timber Frame

Manual methods are slower but can work in spaces where even a spider crane cannot fit. For very tight plant rooms, basements and areas with extremely low headroom, we sometimes combine manual rigging methods with a spider crane positioned outside or in an adjacent area, using both to complete the lift.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spider Crane Hire

How much does spider crane hire cost?

Costs depend on the crane model required, the duration of hire, travel distance and any additional equipment or personnel needed. We provide fixed-price quotations based on the specifics of each job. Contact us with your lift details for a fast quote.

Do I need to supply an operator?

No. Our spider crane hire service includes an experienced, qualified operator. All lifts are delivered as a managed service with competent supervision.

Can a spider crane fit through a standard doorway?

Yes. Many spider crane models are narrow enough to pass through standard single or double doorways. The smallest models are under 600 mm wide. We select the crane model based on the access route to make sure it can reach the working area.

Can a spider crane work indoors?

Yes. Electric and bi-energy spider cranes can operate indoors with zero emissions and minimal noise. They are regularly used inside shopping centres, warehouses, atriums, factories and occupied buildings.

How much can a spider crane lift?

This depends on the model, the radius (distance from the crane to the load) and the lift height. Capacities range from under 1 tonne for compact models up to 10 tonnes for larger mini crawler cranes. The capacity reduces as the radius increases - this is why we need the lift geometry details to recommend the right crane.

Do you provide glass vacuum lifting with spider cranes?

Yes. We can supply vacuum lifting attachments for glass and glazing work, integrated with the spider crane operation. Learn more about our glass lifting service.

What ground conditions can a spider crane work on?

Spider cranes operate on rubber tracks and can work on concrete, tarmac, paving, grass, gravel, mud and uneven ground. Ground protection mats are used where required to spread the load and prevent surface damage. Outrigger pads are deployed during lifting to ensure stability.

Can you combine a spider crane with other lifting methods?

Yes. We regularly integrate spider crane lifts with our other equipment - powered stairclimbers, hydraulic skates, lorry-mounted cranes, gantry hoists and manual rigging - to deliver complete lift and shift solutions.
